Subject: NFH Outreach News: The Power of Advocacy – Forest Service Agrees to 30-year Permit Terms
National Forest Homeowners is pleased to share that the Forest Service has agreed to update
the standard Recreation Residence Special Use Permits to a 30-year permit term – beginning
with the 2028 permits reauthorization cycle
.
Last year, when NFH President Meredith Randall met with Forest Service Chief Schultz, she
shared NFH’s position that changing the standard recreation residence permit to a 30-year term
would give cabin owners more confidence to invest in their cabins and be more efficient for the
Forest Service to administer. They agreed! And with most permits across the country set to
expire in 2028, the Forest Service is focused on communication of and training for this policy
revision.
So, what does this mean for permit holders with recently issued 2044 permits? The policy
change is not retroactive, and the Eldorado NF is not required to alter the recently issued 2044.
However, after the permit is updated and the Forest Service has completed communications
and training, NFH will collaborate with the Forest Service to draft a 10-year extension for
Eldorado permits. Until then, NFH will urge the Eldorado to issue any new permits (e.g., for
cabin sales, transfers into a trust, or changes among co-owners) with the extended term, which
would expire in 2054.
NFH is a volunteer-driven association working on behalf of permit holders all around the
country. Influencing policy change and legislative action, such as the Cabin Program Restoration
Act (which will make the 30-year permit term not just policy but law) to benefit permit holders,
is funded by NFH membership. If you are an NFH member, thank you! If not, now's a great time
to join us.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
