To all Gerle Creek Cabin owners, their friends and family,

 

If you like history and outdoor adventures, you will love this group of ultra athletes, and admittedly, amateur historians. This year's plan will be to retrace the path taken by six members of the Stephens-Townsend-Murphy Party (STMP) on horses in 1844.  They will leave Donner Memorial State Park on 9-29 in the early morning hours and arrive at GCSHT lot 33 at 6:30PM on the 30th. They will be riding five horses. I am inviting everyone to the Holmes/Vail cabin for a campfire (hopefully) and a great time talking with these incredible people. See the link to their website below. They will leave early on October 1st heading for Dru Barner horse camp and eventually Auburn, although the real Horse Party headed for Sinclairs Ranch (Cal Expo).

 

I have been working with Bob Crowley, Tim Twietmeyer, Jennifer Hemmen, Elke Reimer and Hal Hall since 2020 when they ran and snowshoed the 100 miles from the Donner Memorial State Park in five days following the route of the Forlorn Hope group (Donner Party). Since 2020 they have retraced several other notable historic routes which they will talk about at the campfire.  

 

I know it is a weeknight, and we haven’t done this before, but who knew that a brave group of pioneers came through our area in 1844. Live on the wild side. BYOB and bring a chair. Let me know if you’ll attend the campfire. 

 

Bring some good questions. If we don’t know the answer we’ll make something up.
