Changing Landscapes:
Preparing for Wildfire

What can each of us do to increase our cabin's chances of surviving a
natural disaster, particularly fire. 

While we are seeing more catastrophic fires on our National Forests due to
drought, high winds and changing climate, we've learned that not only is it
good for your cabin's survival if your lot has defensible space, but in
fact, firefighters will use well cleaned up cabin tracts as a base for fire
fighting.

NFH's Stewardship Committee has been working to put together tips and
information we can share with tract leaders and cabin owners on how to be
prepared for wildfire. NFH recently released a Framework for Emergency
Planning (FEP) to help local groups get started with emergency plans. 

At the 2025 NFH Conference in Pasadena this year, in one of our breakout
sessions, NFH Director Kevin Orth will be presenting ideas for hardening
your cabin against some types of ignition as well as ways to prepare for a
possible natural disaster.

Earlier this year, Los Angeles, Pasadena and Altadena areas were devastated
by a brush fire that spread onto National Forest lands. We are sensitive to
those who have had losses recently and are hoping to be of service, given
our increasing experience with these emerging challenges.

As with every conference, we will also have a panel of subject matter
experts at the end of the conference who will answer some of your questions
related to the program, our National Forests and related topics. Join us!
